At Brother Vellies and Something Special, she connects artisans to customers, demystifying craftsmanship and connecting shoppers to traditional techniques used in Africa and South America. With the 15 Percent Pledge, she is transforming fashion on the whole, connecting Black-owned businesses with retailers with the goal that those businesses dedicate 15% of their shelf space to Black-created products.

“I am super excited about it, and I’m excited that it has such an incredible home too,” she says, referencing her publishers. “Finding the Softer worser slower weaker shirt and I love this right home for it and publishing company was incredibly important.” James describes her writing process as ebbing and flowing by the day. “A lot of it right now has been really free-form, and after the election in November, I’m really going to try to hunker down in California between November, December, and January,” she says. “When I first moved to America [from Canada], I moved to California, and I’m really going to try to write the bulk of it there.”
